Oil Production V. Consumption
1. Record:
Oil Production: 1.38 million barrels a day. (2013)
Oil Consumption: 1.5 million barrels a day. (2013)
2. Summarize: Write a short paragraph explaining the information you discovered and conclusions you can draw. How does this information help you develop a sense of place for the country -- living conditions, social development, use of land or other resources, etc.?
Canada produces about as much oil as it consumes in a day. This makes the country more self-sustaining. There are also various oil reserves in place in case of need increasing. One of the larger oil producers in the world, Canada exports large amounts of crude oil a day. The oil and gas industry in Canada supports 550,000 jobs across the country.
3. Contemplate:
What are average work conditions pertaining to oil rigging, and dangers or life threats concerning that career?
What qualifies a person to work in various levels of production for oil?
Canada's Economy Overview
Canada's economy resembles the US in the market-based economic system. The unemployment rate in canada is 7.1%, 75th in the world, and the population below the poverty line is 9.4%. There is a high labor force at 19.08 million in various industries such as transportation equipment, chemicals, minerals, food products, and other areas. Canada ranks 3rd in the world for oil reserves. The GDP is $43,100 (19th in world).
Education in Canada

Education, and providing education to nations, has, and will always be a goal for all countries. Education equates with opportunities, and provides preparation necessary to work in many careers paths of today. From the Millennium Development Goals of 2015, number two on the list is to “achieve universal primary education” (undp.org). This if fundamental to not only improving high school retention, but to curb the number of children still out of school. Considering Northern America encompasses Canada and the United States, this model of education that is free and public is not as difficult to attain as a child in a more conflict-affected, or developing area or region. Canada is fortunate enough to be able to seek growing their education for the better, as there is already a large population of people who are actively enrolled in primary school and beyond.
Considering the statistics that of our population, 781 million adults and 126 million youth lack basic literacy, and the gender inequalities with 60% of that statistic being women is alarming. As global partners, it is necessary that we work to bring a level to the countries in need, so that as these children become adults, they do not become a part of that statistic already in place. From reading more on the Global Education First Initiative, I think the idea that it is a partnership between all parties of the world to encourage and supply resources necessary for education. Basic literacy skills are necessary for any form of advancement today, and should become what is norm. I think that having every child in school, and providing a quality education is what is necessary.

Canada is not a developing country that is struggling to establish schools or bring children to classes, so I want to take a brief moment to describe the education process for an average Canadian. In general, United States students will be in general education for 12 years. For Canadians, this is on average 11 years (NationMaster). The United States is ranked 1st in this area, with Canada ranking 4th. OF the number of children out of primary school, the number is under 2,000 in Canada vs. the 1.76 million in the United States. A large number of that is females. In terms of literacy, both the US and Canada are the same, with 99% of the total population considered literate.
Like the United States, Canada offers a universal approach to schooling, where there are little to no barriers between learning for any given individual. Free elementary and secondary schooling is provided in all of Canada’s states or provinces for the past twelve years (International Students Guide). A similar student load system is offered in Canada as well. There are more similarities than difference between the systems. It is important to note, that while education is common and normal to students from this Northern American model, not all countries share the same opportunities and benefits. It is important to plan and practice ways for governments to become involved in foreign and international support. Various schools and institutions offer aid to foreign students, as well as encourage that immersed form of learning, which benefits both parties significantly. As we expand on our educational practices, we should pay attention to how we can help contribute to achieving universal primary education, especially as the new year approaches, and we have various goals to work towards.
